Full formula diets like Optifast provide many advantages over a food plan.
Is Optifast safe? All Optifast formulas are nutritionally complete, using high biological value protein and meeting 100% of the U.S. RDA’s. Individuals are medically supervised by Dr. Barbara Berkeley and the members of the healthcare team at Weight Management Partners, to reduce the potential for side effects and to maximize improvements in weight-related health risks. What is Optifast? Optifast is a high protein, low to moderate carbohydrate, low-fat milkshake formula. It comes in three flavors, chocolate, french vanilla, and strawberry, in addition to a chicken- flavored soup. It has been used to treat over 1,000,000 since 1974. It was developed by three physicians at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. Do you have to be on all Formula? No, in the weight loss phase, you can be placed on full formula, partial formula and one meal, very limited Optifast, or a total low calorie food plan. Can I exercise when on Optifast formula? Yes, exercise is strongly encouraged after your first week of weight loss. Will my metabolism drop after I lose weight on Optifast? There is no conclusive scientific evidence to prove that there is a drop in metabolism after weight loss with Optifast. But after any method of weight loss, a person can not consume as many calories as before the loss because of your new decreased body mass. Can I take Optifast when I am in the maintenance phase? Yes, patients will work out an individualized food plan with the registered dietitian. Patients will be slowly transitioned back to solid food but if Optifast fits as a meal replacement in your busy lifestyle then it can remain as part of your diet plan. Who determines my goal weight? Your goal weight is determined by you, Dr. Berkeley, and the nutrition staff. Also the results of your body composition and RMR test may factor into the decision.
